Code of Conduct

Basketball in Rotorua is whānau. Whether you're playing, coaching, reffing, managing or cheering from the side, we all help keep it safe, fair and fun. This is what we expect from everyone, at games, trainings, tournaments and online.

Everyone at RBA

What we expect from everyone

It covers everyone involved with RBA: players, coaches, managers, referees and officials, volunteers, board members, and parents, whānau and supporters.

  • Treat everyone with respect, fairness and dignity
  • Keep it safe and welcoming for everyone
  • Put the game and our community first
  • Represent Rotorua well, on and off the court

Your role

On and off the court

Players

  • Respect your teammates, opponents and referees
  • Accept decisions and keep your cool
  • Turn up ready and give your best
  • Look after the venue and the gear
  • Keep it positive online
  • No alcohol, vaping, smoking or drugs while representing RBA

Coaches and team managers

  • Put player wellbeing and development ahead of winning
  • Lead by example on the sideline
  • Coach your team, don't criticise the referees
  • Be organised and keep whānau in the loop
  • Act honestly and fairly

Referees and officials

  • Call it fair, consistent and impartial
  • Treat everyone with respect
  • Stay composed under pressure
  • Communicate clearly
  • Keep learning and growing

Parents, whānau and supporters

  • Cheer for every player, not just your own
  • Respect referees and officials
  • Leave the coaching to the coaches
  • Be the example our tamariki see

Not okay, ever

  • Bullying, harassment or intimidation
  • Discrimination of any kind
  • Abuse of referees, players or anyone else
  • Violence or threats
  • Inappropriate contact or messages, especially with young people
  • Anything that brings RBA into disrepute

Breaking the Code can lead to a warning, conditions on your involvement, or suspension or removal from a role, depending on how serious it is. Every case is dealt with fairly.
